welcome to this week’s satellite cult dispatch. i’m so glad you’re here. i hope the artifacts i present you with will transport you to a cybercore shadow realm AU where the Sailor Scouts act out the plot of Hackers (1995) on an infinite loop while a giant cosmic projector drapes them in a flashing, neon grid. eventually, Sailor Mars breaks character to ask you what core core is. in this world, you’ve been granted the mercy to forget.
please be aware that the void dive section below contains flashing gifs. if you’re viewing this on the website, forgive the way Substack formats some Bandcamp embeds.
you can find satellite cult updates and memes on Instagram, and you can visit your cult leader’s Neocities page here.
i write and research satellite cult each week because i love it, and it’s important to me that it remains free to read and subscribe. but if you want to give altar offerings for the time and labor i invest, you can support me on Ko-fi.
if you enjoy what you find here, like, share, and consider subscribing to satellite cult.
I am This Way Because of You
Atlanta-based Psuedosodomyyy’s EP I am This Way Because of You blends gabber, glitch, breakcore, and drum and bass into a scene kid slush of genre defying noise. Some tracks have an industrial bend, some even feel a little digicore, but the first track, “Anime Convention Molly Overdose,” is pure, net-based hardcore, begging the weebs to wear deodorant to the con.
5AV0RY
opening with a nightcore sample of “Mr Vain” and disintegrating into a fuzzy happy hardcore haze, 5AV0RY is hexd from start to finish, with some smart chopping and perfectly timed breaks. somehow the eight tracks on this album never do what you expect them to. out on Santiago, Chile-based Medio Oriente, C3NTELL4’s latest is a masterclass in sextrance plunderphonics.
kbbs.hevn.jpg
this EP blends breakcore, trance, hexd, and drum and bass with Y2K era Playstation aesthetics. dialogue is plundered and sped up throughout, giving these tracks a sense of urgency and relentlessness—moments are syncopated or asynchronous, with separate audio tracks at times feeling distinct, at times all part of one amorphous experience.
花
this haunting, synth-led broken transmission album is like being dropped in the middle of an infinite grid where VHS rips of 80s commercials appear at random, lining invisible walls and guiding your way as you trek back to the shopping mall that lives in your memory but no where else.
rerelease: IKARI-蒸気波LP III
who knew Shinji Ikari liked vaporwave? the 2021 album by 空手王 just got a new release on Cityman Productions. it’s future funk influenced, but plenty of tracks still draw more from classic vapor, resulting in something smoother and more relaxed than nu-disco heavy future funk classics—aesthetically a little more In the Mood for Love and a little less anime pastels. somehow, it makes sense that Evangelion is the middle ground.
neocities features
created in March of 2019 and last updated four years ago, Sweden flag is a shitposting page from deep in the Granblue fandom, featuring an unlisted Youtube video of a Granblue meme and the full text of the opening monologue from The Bee Movie.
Mystery Kiss is a website dedicated entirely to paranormal romance mystery books and was founded in April 2023. i’m not partial to the paranormal romance mystery, but i do appreciate small, niche communities dedicated to incredibly specific genres of book. the about page states that the blog has been maintained since 2020 (i assume it moved from another host), and the photo of the website’s author looks almost AI generated when you stare at it too long. supposedly, Luna Moon lives in Brooklyn with her detective husband and her cats, Sherlock and Watson, which feels a little too on theme to be real. the only book reviewed on the site so far was written by someone who shares the author’s (certainly also fake) last name. real or not, there’s a certain charm to not knowing.
Get Hallowed!, which was created in May 2023, is (i presume) a cool little piece of net art that dares to ask “Do you want to touch the internet with your face?”
yeah. yeah, i do.
gun fight
this simple 8bit PvP by SnowCabinGames is playable in browser and features two cowboys yeehawing out their conflicts with pistols. it’s a cute way to pass some time with the bestie if you get bored of playing Smash.
