thank you all for sticking with the cult, even through my sporadic (in)activity this year. i’m eagerly awaiting a moment when i feel equipped to continue weekly satcult posting. but in the meantime, you should follow me at trash utopia, where i will still cover the internet and digital culture, but from a more critical perspective. i have written critically about the internet for satcult before, but its format makes it difficult to discuss topics in-depth. this is my solution.
trash utopia will launch tomorrow (1/5). posting will not be on a regular schedule, but like satcult, it will remain free to read and subscribe. here’s a taste of trash utopia:
“the Yesterweb movement might be dead, but the indie web scene is thriving. i think it’s up to us to build our own better, smaller, more personal, more anarchistic infrastructures for the internet instead of mourning the era of social media optimism or idealizing any one moment in the history of the web. the solution to your digital ennui isn’t hopping from one Twitter clone to the next. it’s utilizing existing tools, old and new, to divest.
that doesn’t mean i’m not interested in writing about big platforms or corporate tech. i’m well aware that these entities are shaping humanity’s future to align with their grotesque visions of control. but i refuse to write as if our online experiences and consciousnesses are doomed to the mercy of founders and CEOs, or like we’re powerless to create our own spaces. billionaires and tech dictators have their trajectories and timelines. at least for now, we can have our own, too.”
