welcome to this week’s satellite cult dispatch. i’m so glad you’re here. i hope the artifacts i present you with will transport you to an alternate reality where Taco Bell’s mascot is still a chihuahua and the half-live action Sailor Moon exploded.
please be aware that the void dive section below contains flashing gifs. forgive the way Substack formats some embedded media from Bandcamp if you’re viewing this on the website.
you can find satellite cult updates and memes on Instagram, and you can visit your cult leader’s Neocities page here.
i write and research satellite cult each week because i love it, and it’s important to me that it remains free to read and subscribe. but if you want to give altar offerings for the time and labor i invest, you can support me on Ko-fi.
if you enjoy what you find here, like, share, and consider subscribing to satellite cult.
Access Memory / Gumpsh
an ambient drone and noise single from Better Safe Never, Access Memory / Gumpsh draws from vaporwave and the aesthetics of liminality, leaving you in an empty backroom alone but sparkling.
WAHHHRIO WORLD
i never knew i needed an eclectic vaporwave-inspired album of Wario World plunderphonics, but here it is, and it’s industrial and energizing, transforming this into this.
リバータウン クロッシング
this is mallsoft with a personal touch. a tribute to Magdalene’s childhood mall,リバータウン クロッシング is a Saturday in the main concourse of mid-size suburban shopping center, its crowded food court, a slice of shitty pizza, a childhood spent hiding in the clothing racks while your mom shopped.
WAISETSU BREAKS
hyp3rg0r3 is back with their first release of the year on Vapor Scape Records, and it’s a happy mashcore sensation that plunders from anime outros and delivers if you’re craving sweet, sweet breaks.
In Acid Veritas
this braindance EP feels like the industrial cousin of dungeon synth, evoking dystopian cyberpunk deserts far outside the neon and chrome cityscapes so commonly explored in the genre.
山地冒險
originally released in 2013, 山地冒險 was not uploaded to Bandcamp by its creator, but by 夢のリポジトリ, an account currently sharing “classic rare Vaporwave releases” with the rest of us. this album is all slushy, epic herowave, calling back to low budget 80s fantasy special effects.
game boy manuals
this collection of Game Boy manuals on the Internet Archive will make you wish you still had your copy of Link’s Awakening.1 unfortunately, some of the scans are pretty low quality (see below), but something about the number of pixels adds to the charm, like you’re seeing the images on some playthrough forum or Geocities fan page in 2003.
terramaker
TerraMaker is a puzzle game by securas, available to play in-browser on itch.io. made for the DDJAM - EDIÇÃO DE CARNAVAL game jam, TerraMaker has you, the player, build a maze to help a little pixel friend out of a dungeon with an excellent soundtrack in the background.
void dive
i’ll leave you with this early 90s video compilation from MTV Europe:
not to flex, but i still do
